The Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) takes a bolder step to an aggressive fight against common diseases that have crept over remote Muslim communities, even as the region’s Department of Health continues to provide medical services from the launching days of the ARMM-H.E.L.P.S. in Barangays Sulloh and Lanawan in Tabuan Lasa, Cambug and Al Barka in Basilan province.
Officials and workers led by Governor Mujiv S. Hataman raised the torch of sheer governance by providing communities with integrated services of collaborating agencies, during the launching of the ARMM H.E.L.P.S.: Health, Education, Livelihood, Peace and Governance and Synergy. Initially, the launching commenced in those areas in days of continuing services from January 29 to 31, 2013 and on February 7, 2013.
Residents had first-hand experience with government agencies, mainly DOH-ARMM, providing them health, medical, surgical and dental care services, supplemental feeding and nutritional assessment to children (6 months to 5 years old), as well as, PhilHealth orientation and distribution of IDs. DOH is still looking forward to extending more valuable contributions to uplift the health condition of those areas and with more barangays for similar services.
In Tabuan Lasa, a total of 738 patients were able to avail of the medical services, 70 for dental checkup including tooth extraction. Some 216 children (6 months to 5 years) underwent health assessment in terms of nutritional status such as, weighing, height/length measuring and mid-upper arm circumference measurement.
Meanwhile in Al Barka, 189 availed of medical services, 24 of dental services and 32 were assessed of their nutritional status.
Some beneficiaries were visibly in tears, probably in grateful appreciation of the services which they rarely experience because of the remoteness of their communities. To government health workers, the medical mission partly constituting ARMM-H.E.L.P.S. program was a rewarding experience having served those who needed their services most. (Saida O.
