ARMM employees including the Regional Planning and Development Office (RPDO) personnel participated in the kick-off parade of the 2016 National Women's Month Celebration (NWMC) on March 8 at the region's seat, Cotabato City. The month-long celebration is spearheaded by the Regional Commission on Bangsamoro Women (RCBW) as the lead advocate for women's empowerment and gender equality in the ARMM.
With the theme "Kapakanan ni Fatima, Isama sa Agenda", the celebration is in line with its objective to promote a gender-balanced leadership and decision-making positions both in the public and private sector, to raise women empowerment to be included in the government's agenda, to capacitate all women in attaining their goals, as well as strengthen public awareness on the National Women's Month relative to the women's issues that need to be addressed.
Ms. Perusa Abdurahman, one of the commissioners of the RCBW, said that the celebration is an offshoot of the tragic March 25 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in New York City, which took the lives of more than 140 working girls, mostly Italian and Jewish immigrants. Subsequently, the inhumane working conditions and other unfair labor practices which lead up to the disaster were invoked during observances of International Women's Day (IWD).
"In Europe, Clara Zetkin and the Socialist Women’s International demanded that March 8th be the International Women’s Day (IWD), celebrated each year to recognize workingwomen around the world. The celebration of IWD has since stimulated major historical events," Commissioner Abdurahman added.
In addition, the celebration is consistent with Presidential Proclamation No. 227 s. 1988, providing for the annual observance of the National Women’s Month Celebration (NWMC) every month of March in the country.
Various activities are lined up for the month to pursue the course of the said celebration such as public events and online advocacies.
