article1MANILA --- Power and energy are among pressing issues currently besetting the government. Most Mindanao areas have suffered from the adverse effects of rotational power interruptions, often blamed on inadequacy of power supply generation.

Even the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao which hosts key hydroelectric power plants in Mindanao has not been spared from this problem.

A meeting on March 11, 2014 was an opportunity for some ARMM Regional Cabinet Members led by Executive Secretary Laisa Masuhud Alamia to discuss the issue with officials from the Department of Energy (DOE), the National Electrification Authority (NEA) and the National Power Corporation (NPC).

Executive Secretary Alamia explained that the leadership of ARMM Governor Mujiv Hataman has been bound to address inherent problems and issues, since he assumed office in late 2011--including the power issues. She said the same power issues were raised by ARMM provincial governors during the most recent meeting of the Regional Economic and Development Planning Board, by which local officials sought to be clarified on power related issues in the region.

Attending officials from the DOE, NEA and NPC updated ARMM officials on the current power situation, on-going programs and projects funded under regular programs and the ER-194 and other related information.

Current status of ARMM cooperatives and issues concerns pertaining to their operations was also tackled. It was learned that some of the electric cooperatives in the ARMM had huge and piling up unpaid debts with the NPC. This has been attributed to low collection efficiency brought about by non-paying of electricity bills by some delinquent households and commercial consumers, and to high systems loss.

The Regional Planning and Development Office helped organize the meeting, in close coordination with the Office of the Regional Governor and the ARMM Manila Liaison office. (MMI of RPDO-ARMM)
